Abstract
Since published in 1973, Baumrind’s finding about parenting style–which dimensions were specified in her next publication–became the most important reference for research in parenting effect on children’s psychological outcomes. This study aim to evaluate primary research that studied the effect of parenting behavior on adolescents’ self-esteem, focusing on parent support, control, and parent-child communication. Ten relevant studies were chosen from electronic database search. Results reveal that parenting behavior and adolescents’ self-esteem were correlated significantly. A moderating variable was not found in parents’ support and control in association to adolescents’ self- esteem, but such was obvious in parent-child communication in association to adolescents’ self- esteem. Unfortunately the data in primary studies were insufficient to find the moderating variable’s role.
